What Is Paint Protection Film?

Paint Protection Film (also called clear bra or PPF) is an optically transparent urethane film that bonds to your vehicle's painted surfaces. At 8 mils (200 microns) thick, 4 to 5 times the thickness of your factory clear coat, it absorbs the impact of rock chips, road debris, and environmental contaminants before they ever reach your paint.

Unlike wax or ceramic coatings, PPF provides physical impact protection. The top coat features self-healing technology: minor scratches and swirl marks disappear with gentle heat from the sun or warm water, leaving your paint looking flawless for years. That healing works on light to moderate marks: wash swirls, a belt buckle dragged across a fender. A deep gouge that cuts through the film will not heal, but it stopped short of your paint, which is the entire point.

Consultation & inspection
We walk the car with you under lighting, document the paint's condition, and agree on coverage before anything is ordered.

Surface preparation
A full decontamination wash and clay. Film locks in whatever is beneath it, so a car with swirls gets corrected first, not wrapped over.

Plotter-cut patterns
Film is cut to your exact model on a computer plotter. No blade ever touches your paint, which is how bulk-installed film goes wrong.

Wrapped edges

Clear Bra Warranty: What's Covered

The Suntek and STEK films we install carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty. Here is what it covers, and what no film warranty does.

Not covered by any film warranty
  • Punctures. A large or sharp piece of debris can cut through the film. When that happens the film did its job: the paint underneath is protected, and the panel can be re-filmed on its own.
  • Pressure-washer damage. Holding the wand closer than 24 inches, or using a tip narrower than 40°, can lift an edge or force water under the film. Our aftercare guide covers safe washing.
  • Collisions and accidents. Film stops chips, not crashes. Damage from an impact or a scrape in an accident is a repair, not a defect.

On gloss paint, properly installed PPF is virtually invisible. You may notice very subtle edges at seam lines if you look closely under bright light, but from normal viewing distance the film is optically clear and undetectable. Matte or satin PPF options are also available for wrapped or matte-painted vehicles.
Premium films like Suntek, STEK, and 3M Pro Series are specifically formulated to resist yellowing. Our Suntek and STEK films include a 10-year manufacturer warranty that covers discoloration, yellowing, cracking, and peeling under normal use conditions.
Partial installs (front bumper, hood, headlights) typically take 1 day. Full front-end packages are 1–2 days. Full body wraps are 3–5 days depending on the vehicle and complexity. We'll give you a specific timeline estimate during your consultation.
Yes. PPF can be professionally removed without damage to the underlying paint, as long as the paint was in good condition at the time of installation and the film hasn't been on for more than 10 years. This is one of the key advantages of PPF over permanent coatings.
It's not required, but it's the optimal combination. PPF provides physical impact protection. Ceramic coating on top of PPF adds hydrophobic water-sheeting, makes the film much easier to clean, and enhances gloss. Many of our clients choose to do both at the same time for maximum protection.
Look at it against the alternative. Repainting a hood properly runs into the thousands, more on an exotic or an import with hard-to-match paint, and a repaint never matches factory finish exactly. A front-end film package typically costs a fraction of that and protects the panels most likely to need it. It also protects resale value, because the paint underneath stays original.

Most road damage concentrates on the front of the car, so full front-end coverage, hood, fenders, bumper, mirrors, is the popular starting point. Step up to Premium if you drive highway miles, park in the city, or want rockers, A-pillars, and the roof edge covered. Full body is for owners keeping the car long term. We recommend based on your car and how you drive it, not on what costs more.
Yes. Clear bra, paint protection film and PPF are three names for the same product: a clear, 8-mil urethane film bonded to your paint. The name comes from the black vinyl front-end bras of the past. Clear film does the same job without hiding the car.
On a regularly driven car, expect 6 to 8 years. Garaged, well-maintained cars can reach 10. The Suntek and STEK films we install carry a 10-year manufacturer warranty against yellowing, cracking and peeling, and a panel that takes a heavy hit can be re-filmed on its own without redoing the whole car.
It stops light ones. Wash swirls and fine scratches heal in the top coat with heat from the sun or warm water, and light door dings and scuffs land in the film instead of the paint. It will not stop a dent: a hard enough hit can still bend the panel underneath. A deep gouge that cuts the film will not heal, but it usually stops short of the paint.
They solve different problems. PPF is the only one of the two that stops rock chips, because it is a physical layer that absorbs the impact. Ceramic coating adds gloss, chemical resistance and easier washing, but it cannot stop a chip. Many owners do both: PPF on the front end or the whole car, with ceramic coating over the film and the rest of the paint.
Wait at least 14 days. The film is still bonding during that time, so leave it alone, and do not push at any small bubbles or haze: they clear on their own as the adhesive cures. After that, wash normally with the two-bucket method, and keep a pressure washer at least 24 inches from the film with a 40° or wider tip. The full routine is in our aftercare guide.
Often, yes. Film locks in whatever is beneath it, so swirls and light scratches under the film stay there for the life of the film. A brand-new car usually needs only a decontamination wash and a light polish. A car that has been driven for a year or more usually needs a correction first. We check the paint under lights at the inspection and tell you which yours needs.
